What is kayaking Lough Mask like?
A wild and beautiful paddle along the east shore of Lough Mask beneath the Partry Mountains. The crystal-clear limestone waters reveal rocky outcrops beneath the surface, and the Tourmakeady waterfall tumbles through dense woodland on the hillside above. Keep an eye out for peregrine falcons hunting along the cliff faces.
How do I paddle Lough Mask? Put-in, take-out and logistics
Lough Mask is the middle lake in the Corrib-Mask-Carra chain and sits in a deep karst basin beneath the Partry Mountains on its eastern shore. The water clarity here is exceptional — visibility of 6 to 8 metres is common — because the lake drains underground through limestone into Lough Corrib rather than via a surface river. Tourmakeady Pier is a small stone jetty with space for half a dozen cars; launching is straightforward on the gravel shore beside it. Head north along the eastern bank and the Partry Mountains rise steeply to your right, with the Tourmakeady waterfall visible through the oak and birch woodland about 2 km into the paddle.
When is the best time to paddle Lough Mask?
The lake is deep — over 50 metres in places — and the limestone bed drops away sharply from the shore, so the water temperature can feel cool even in midsummer. Mask is renowned as a wild brown trout fishery, and you will encounter drift boats working the shallows from mid-February through September, particularly during the mayfly hatch in late May. Westerly winds build quickly on Mask because it has a long fetch from the Connemara side; the eastern shore provides some shelter, but conditions can change within an hour. If the wind picks up, the bay south of Tourmakeady near Cushlough offers a protected retreat. The Partry cliffs host nesting peregrine falcons — listen for their sharp kek-kek-kek call echoing off the rock face, especially in spring when they are feeding young.

How do I stay safe paddling Lough Mask?
Watch for Wind Funnels
Lakes surrounded by hills and mountains can channel wind into sudden gusts across open water. Check the forecast before launching and stay within swimming distance of the shoreline if gusts above 20 km/h are expected.
Respect Cold Water
Irish lake temperatures rarely exceed 16°C even in summer, and can trigger cold water shock within seconds of immersion. Wear a wetsuit or drysuit outside June–August, and always wear a properly fitted PFD.
File a Float Plan
Open water has few landmarks and fog can close in quickly. Leave your route and expected return time with someone ashore, carry a whistle, and bring a fully charged phone or VHF radio in a waterproof case.
